As expected, Monmouth Regional stayed in-house for its replacement as head coach for Sal Spampanato. Former assistant Jason Morrell was recently approved as the Falcons new head coach, which was first reported by The Asbury Park Press.

Spampanato decided to step down after leading the Falcons to their second state playoff berth in school history in the fall. He indicated at that time that the majority of his staff was also leaving, so much of Morrell’s staff may be new.

Also, Lacey senior wide receiver/defensive back Zach Torrell has committed to Monmouth University for track, according to Lacey head coach Lou Vircillo.

Here is the release from Vircillo:

Zach Torrell made some great contributions as a Lacey Lion football player over the last three varsity seasons. He received post – season honors as a wide receiver and defensive back and also made his way into the Lacey record books. His 45 career receptions with 486 yards placed him number 5 and 12 respectively as an ALL TIME receiver.

On defense he really made his mark with 13 interceptions and 13 pass deflections placing him number 2 in both categories in the Lacey record book for the thirty year old program. Head Football Coach, Lou Vircillo stated that Zach was one of Lacey’s best in history. “ Zach Torrell will go down as one of the best student- athletes in the history of the school. He carries a 4.15 GPA, is in the National Honor Society, and has excelled in two varsity sports finishing one as a very productive team member on a State Championship Team and returning to the other which is track as a state finalist in the Javelin event.”

Zach presently holds the school record in the Javelin throw at 193’ 6”.  “ Jason England, his receiver and defensive back coach in football is also his weight event coach in track. Coach England has many of our football boys in track and has done an excellent job with them.” Track would bring Zach enough recognition to become a scholarship athlete.

He will attend Monmouth University in the fall and join another former Lacey football and track standout, Vincent Elardo. Vincent Elardo has become one of the best shot put athletes in the country. “ Monmouth University has become a great University for our men to attend. They have a great competitive reputation and are located in our back yard, “ said  Vircillo. Two other Lacey football standouts, Justin Pandorf and Corey Neil play on the Monmouth University football team.

Zach Torrell will now become a “Hawk”, he will still wear blue in his uniform, and he will compete for a New Jersey team only 40 minutes up the parkway. One of his favorite thoughts is that he will be 1 mile from the beach.
