No surprises on the Freehold coaching front, as has been previously reported, defensive coordinator Dave Ellis has been the clear choice to replace Mark Ciccotelli as the head coach of the defending Central Jersey Group III champions. Ellis is expected to be officially approved as the new head coach at tonight’s Board of Education meeting. Ellis helped build one of the Shore Conference’s best defenses in recent seasons, a fast and swarming unit that has helped the Colonials win two CJ III titles in the last three seasons after not having won in program history before 2008. He was an assistant under Ciccotelli for Ciccotelli’s entire seven-year tenure before Ciccotelli was hired as the new head coach at Neptune during this offseason.

That means Ellis will square off against his old friend when Neptune and Freehold meet in Class B North play this season, and the two teams could certainly meet again in the state playoffs.
