Flaherty, Eliades, Barbieri Headed to NFL Training Camps

Three former Shore Conference stars will be getting their shot to make an NFL roster now that the lockout has ended and the undrafted free agent frenzy of signings began on Tuesday.

Former Red Bank Catholic/Princeton University tight end Harry Flaherty is headed down to New Orleans to join the Saints training camp. Flaherty’s uncle is Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, and Flaherty’s father, also named Harry, is also a former RBC star who played for the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles as well is in the USFL. Plus, his grandfather, Jim, was a longtime scout with the Cowboys, and several of his other uncles also work in the NFL, so there are plenty of NFL ties in the family.

Flaherty played tight end and some H-back at Princeton, and another skill that could help him stick on a roster is that he is a long-snapper.

Former Ocean Township offensive lineman Lou Eliades, who started for Penn State as a senior this past fall, flew out to Oakland on Tuesday and looks to sign with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent, according to Ocean head coach Don Klein. Eliades just has to pass his physical on Wednesday morning and he will be ready to go in the Raiders’ camp.

Perhaps the most impressive journey of any player is Middletown South graduate Howard Barbieri. He went to Rutgers as a preferred walk-on and worked his way into the starting lineup on the offensive line. Now he has been signed by the Houston Texans and brought into their camp. He joins former Brick Memorial/Wisconsin star tight end Garrett Graham, who was a fourth-round pick of the Texans last year.

Monmouth University wide receiver Chris Hogan was also invited to join the San Francisco 49ers preseason camp.

Congrats and good luck to all four.
