More Shore Players in NFL Camps, Johnson Gets Offer, 2 Sign with Gattaca Football

There are now six former Shore Conference players in NFL camps, as Neptune graduates Andre Carroll and Cory Nelms, along with former Long Branch lineman Darius Morris, have joined Middletown South/Rutgers offensive lineman Howard Barbieri, Red Bank Catholic/Princeton tight end Harry Flaherty and Ocean Township/Penn State offensive lineman Lou Eliades among undrafted free agents invited to NFL camps.

Carroll, a defensive lineman from Delaware State, is in camp with the Cleveland Browns. Nelms, a defensive back who played at the University of Miami, is in camp with the San Francisco 49ers. Morris, an offensive lineman who played at Temple, is in camp with the Houston Texans, where Barbieri is another lineman competing for a spot on a team that also features former Brick Memorial/Wisconsin tight end Garrett Graham.

As for a recent Shore Conference graduation, Lakewood defensive lineman Da’Quan Kenney has opted to play for Gattaca Football, a club team that plays a junior college schedule, according to head coach Manuel Galarza. It used to be affiliated with Mercer County College, but is now based in Toms River and its players attend Ocean County College. Kenney is joined by former Brick Memorial/Lakewood defensive lineman Tysheem Smith, making it Smith’s third junior college program since finishing at Brick Memorial. Both players received Division I-A interest and took visits to BCS programs this past spring but have elected to play a season of juco football.

As for returning players, Manchester senior Joe Johnson, one of the Shore’s top returning running backs, has been offered by Monmouth University, according to Hawks head coach Gerard O’Donnell.
